Comprehensive Eye Examinations:
Eye Examinations are the beginning of a healthy journey. We begin with your patient history, followed by questions regarding your needs for your current visit. We then review your current pertinent ocular history, as well as your medical history and your family's history of ocular and systemic disease. Any medications or allergies also are noted. Visual acuities are checked with current correction and no correction. The refraction determines a patient's glasses and contact lens prescriptions. These prescriptions can be utilized to meet differing visual needs such as distance vision for playing golf, shooting, computer use, pool, or special occupational requirements.
Pupil, peripheral vision, binocular vision, and muscle testing are performed to determine any neurological problems related to glaucoma, diabetes, detached retina, multiple sclerosis, and other diseases or damage to the optic nerve. On children, we perform color vision, depth perception testing, and muscle balance testing. Using a biomicroscope, we then examine the anterior portion of your eye including lids, lashes, cornea, conjunctiva, anterior chamber, iris, and crystalline lens. Tonometry (eye pressure test mainly for glaucoma) is performed. Our patients are pleased to know that we do not use the "air puff" tonometer. We utilize the Goldman Tonometer which provides extremely accurate measurements for our diagnostic needs. A dilated fundus exam allows a thorough evaluation of the posterior eye, optic nerve, retinal arteries and veins, macula and peripheral retina. At the conclusion of your examination, Dr. Brooks addresses all findings and answers any questions.
